Ultimate Bald Eagle Show
Campbell River, Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Imagine yourself standing on a boat in a serene and magical landscape, surrounded by 300-400 majestic and very impressive bald eagles. Some sitting stagnant in trees along the rugged shoreline while others fly around in circles, all waiting for the perfect moment. Suddenly, there is a shift in energy as individuals start swooping down to catch a floating hake with their razor-sharp talons.
You hear every beat of their wings as they rush to fly off with a small fish, securely grasped between blades of death. Some eagles try their luck for a quick meal as they try and snatch a fish from those who were successful. Some fish are swallowed midair, some are dropped and immediately snatched up by other hungry eagles. Inexperienced Juveniles are being harassed by the more experienced, but they fight back to also claim a beloved prize. There is mayhem everywhere and you stand in total awestruck of this natural phenomenon.
This remarkable and thrilling feeding frenzy only happens for a short period of time during late spring to early summer each year. Dramatic changes in tides occur when massive amounts of water are being forced through ¼ mile or less wide channels. This creates fast currents also known as tidal rapids, creating a serious of whirlpools and upswellings. Every year North Pacific Hake fish migrates through the Discovery Islands. This fast water movements are deadly to the Hake, as they are being pushed to the surface in large numbers. They are trapped on the surface as their swim bladders expands, therefor creating easy targets for hundreds of hungry Bald Eagles.
Witnessing this astonishing natural event should be very high on your to-do list. Whether you are a keen birder, nature lover or enthusiast, wildlife photographer or non-photographer or just a tag along spouse, you are sure to be awe struck by this spectacle.
Join me on either a one day or a two-day workshop as we explore the incredible area in the Discovery Islands.
The eagles are not the only stars of the show as we will explore the rich waters of the Pacific Ocean in search of humpback whales, orcas, Pacific White Sided dolphins Stellar Sea Lions, seals and even black and grizzly bears that could possibly be foraging for clams on the nearby beaches.

This is a two day workshop. Some of the activities will be dependant on weather, but here is a sample of what it might look like.
Day one
Meet at Campbell River at 9:30 am. (Specific place will be communicated)
After a short safety briefing we will depart on the boat. We will look out for any marine mammals on our way to the Eagle Show and spend some time with them.
Be in total admiration for all the beautiful views surrounding Campbell river.
Depending on the sightings a small lunch would be served.
The eagles will be in the vicinity but they might not be active yet by the time we get to them.
Patience is the name of the game as the tides start rushing in.
Before long the Hake will hopefully start rising to the top, just in time for hungry Eagles to start their feast.
After the feast dies down we continue in our search for other Marine wildlife.
As with anything in nature nothing is guaranteed. We do however try our very best to put you in the the best position for stunning wildlife photography.
Day Two
This day will be a repeat of Day one.
Nature will for the most part decide on our direction as we search for marine wildlife on our way to the eagle show.

If you are feeling adventurous and want to explore more of the area before or after the trip on your own, the Ferry would be your best bet. With set scheduled times throughout the day it is very easy to plan your trip. Fly in to Comox or directly to Campbell river is a very convenient option. Which ever way you choose, the scenery will be incredibly and it will be well worth it.

Certain areas around the town will have some but the further away we venture the less signal will be around. I will be bringing a satellite phone just in case of emergencies.
Maybe a zero connection might just be a good thing. Otherwise how else will you be connected to the experience?
-
It's a very comfortable ride for the majority of the time. There could be some choppy conditions if it’s fairly windy but the captain will try to mitigate it as much as possible. When riding between the Islands, conditions are general very smooth.
